Repair work on refrigerant circuit which may be performed only in appropriate workshops by trained mechanics, vehicles with refrigerant R134a
Note
- Notes on repair work to vehicles with air conditioning system and on handling refrigerant can be found in ELSA.
- Notes on testers and tools for repair work to vehicles with air conditioning can be found in ELSA.
- Notes on working on air-conditioned vehicles using air conditioner service station can be found in ELSA.
- Under certain conditions, it is not necessary to renew the dryer bag every time that the refrigerant circuit is opened. Refer to ELSA.
- The procedure for purging with refrigerant R134a is described in ELSA.
WARNING Danger from refrigerant escaping under pressure! Freezing of skin and other body parts.

Note
- The refrigerant circuit must be purged with refrigerant R134a under the following circumstances:
- If dirt or other contamination is in the circuit.
- If during the evacuation of a leak-tight refrigerant circuit the vacuum is not maintained at the gauge (there is moisture in the refrigerant circuit and this generates vapour pressure).
- If the refrigerant circuit has remained open longer than necessary for assembly (e.g. after an accident).
- When pressure and temperature measurements in the refrigerant circuit indicate that there is moisture in the refrigerant circuit.
- There is doubt about the amount of refrigerant oil in the refrigerant circuit.
- The air conditioner compressor has to be exchanged because of internal damage (e.g. noisy or lack of power).
Repair work on refrigerant circuit which may be performed only in appropriate workshops by trained mechanics, vehicles with refrigerant R1234yf
In some countries special qualifications are required for any work for which the refrigerant circuit needs to be opened.

Routing and attaching pipes and wiring
- Mark fuel lines, hydraulic lines, vacuum lines, lines for activated charcoal filter system and electrical wiring etc. before removal so they can be re-installed in the original positions and correctly connected. Make drawings or take photos if needed.
- To prevent damaging pipes, hoses and wiring, ensure sufficient clearance from all moving or hot components in engine compartment (little space in engine compartment).
- After fixing the refrigerant tubes, the routing of the tubes has to be checked: they must be positioned in the intended holders and should not make contact with other components.

Refrigerant fill quantities, vehicles with refrigerant R134a
Note A tolerance of 500 +- 15 g is permissible although not indicated on the identification plate.
Refrigerant fill quantities, vehicles with refrigerant R1234yf
Note A tolerance of 460 +- 15 g is permissible although not indicated on the identification plate.
Refrigerant machine oil
Refrigerant oil, vehicles with refrigerant R134a
Note
- The special refrigerant oil used exclusively for refrigerating circuits with R134a should not be acquired as up to now in the market for refrigerating machines.
- Refrigerant oils from containers which have been open for a lengthy period are no longer usable.
1) This quantity of refrigerant oil is contained in a replacement compressor and equals the overall capacity.
Additional information:
Because refrigerant oil is very hygroscopic, opened containers must be closed airtight immediately after use to prevent moisture from entering.

Oil distribution
The oil, which is located in the sump of the air conditioner compressor before the air conditioner system is switched on for the first time, distributes itself through the refrigerant circuit as follows:
- Air conditioner compressor approx. 50 %
- Condenser 10 % approx.
- Extraction hose 10 % approx.
- Evaporator 20 % approx.
- Receiver approx. 10 %
