Special tools and workshop equipment required

• Ultrasonic cleaning unit for the air conditioner circuit - VAS 6189B-
• Cleaning liquid - VAS 6189/1-
• Suction nozzle - VAS 6288-
• Commercially available dust extractor

Operation process

• By switching from fresh air to air recirculation mode, check whether the air conditioning unit evaporator is really the source of the odour .
• Check and if necessary clean the plenum chamber water drain.
• Remove dust and pollen filter.
• Clean the mounting slot for the dust and pollen filter.
• Seal the opening for the dust and pollen filter at the air conditioning unit.
• Start the engine.
• Close the windows, sun roof and rear lid.
• Open all dash panel vents.

Vehicles with manually controlled air conditioner:

• Make the following settings on the operating unit, air conditioning system control unit - J301- :
  • Air conditioner compressor is switched off: The lamp in the AC button -5- does not light up.
  • Set the rotary temperature control -1- to the "Cold" stop.
  • Press the recirculated air -2- button: the lamp of the button lights up.
  • Set the rotary fresh air blower control -3- to speed "1".
  • Set the rotary air distribution control -4- to "Dash panel vents".

Vehicles with automatically controlled air conditioner:

• Make the following settings on the operating unit, Climatronic control unit - J255- :
  • Air conditioner compressor is switched off: the lamp in the AC button -11- does not light up.
  • Turn the temperature preselection with control switches -1, 7- to "cold": Display "LO" for driver's and front passenger's side in display -3- of the -J255- .
  • Press the buttons -5, 6- for "dash panel vents".
  • Switch the controller -9- for the fresh air blower to the lowest level: -V2- runs at the lowest speed.

All vehicles (continued):

• Shake the bottle with the cleaning fluid - VAS 6189/1- and insert into the ultrasonic cleaning unit for the air conditioner circuit - VAS 6189B-

Note For handling of ultrasonic air conditioner cleaning unit, refer to - Operating instructions of -VAS 6189B- .

• Place the ultrasonic cleaning unit for the air conditioning circuit - VAS 6189B- in the footwell vent on the front passenger side.
• Start up the ultrasonic air conditioner cleaning unit - VAS 6189B- (see operating instructions of the unit) and position the outlet hose such that the vapour emerging is drawn in by the fresh air blower - V2- via the recirculated-air opening of the air conditioner unit (in the passenger's footwell behind the glove compartment).
• Close the vehicle doors.

Note Cleaning takes 15 to 20 minutes. If steam no longer escapes from the discharge hose of the ultrasonic cleaning unit for the air conditioner circuit - VAS 6189B- , the process is completed.

• Switch off the ultrasonic air conditioner cleaning unit - VAS 6189B- .
• Open the vehicle doors and vent the vehicle for at least 10 minutes.
• Remove the ultrasonic cleaning unit for the air conditioner circuit - VAS 6189B- from inside the vehicle and clean it.
• Turn the ignition off.
• Install dust and pollen filter.
