Removing and installing brake light switch, LHD

Note

  • The brake light switch is located in the brake master cylinder.
  • The brake light switch is not adjustable.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • Torque wrenches - V.A.G 1410-

Anti-lock brake system

Removing:

Vehicles with diesel engines

  • Free vacuum hose -arrows-.
  • Loosen hose clips -1 and 2-, remove ventilation pipe.

Anti-lock brake system

Vehicles with 1.8-l and 2.0-l petrol engines

  • Loosen hose clips -2 and 3-, remove ventilation pipe.

Continuation for all engines

Anti-lock brake system

  • Remove the connector -2-.
  • Screw out bolt -3-.
  • Pull brake light switch - F- -1- at bottom off brake master cylinder.

Installation:

Anti-lock brake system

Carry out installation in the reverse sequence, noting the following:

  • Ensure that the brake light switch - F- -1- seat properly on edge -arrow- of brake master cylinder.
Caution

Make sure that the brake lights work properly before the vehicle is driven on the road.

Removing and installing brake light switch, RHD

Note

  • The brake light switch is located in the brake master cylinder.
  • The brake light switch is not adjustable.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • Torque wrenches - V.A.G 1410-

Anti-lock brake system

Removing:

Vehicle with diesel engine

  • Remove engine cover .
  • Release and pull off fuel supply lines -1- and -2-.
  • Separate plug-in connectors .

Anti-lock brake system

WARNING

The fuel line is under pressure.

Fuel poses danger of injury to eyes and skin.

Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid injuries and contact with skin. Wrap cloth around joint before unfastening hose connections. Then reduce pressure by carefully opening the connection.

  • Unclip fuel lines -1- and -2- from retainer -arrow- on coolant reservoir -3-.
  • Unscrew the mounting nuts -2-.
  • Remove nut -1-.

Anti-lock brake system

  • Open retainer -arrow- and unclip fuel lines -1-.
  • Then lay fuel filter to one side.

Continuation for all engines

Anti-lock brake system

  • Release electrical connector -1- and pull off.
  • Release catches using a screwdriver -arrow-.
  • Place coolant expansion tank onto engine.
  • Remove upper toothed belt cover.

Anti-lock brake system

  • Remove heat shield -1- if present.
  • Also unscrew screw -3- with Torx screwdriver bit T30 - T10405- .
  • Pull heat shield -1- upwards out of retainers -arrows- on brake fluid reservoir -2-.

Anti-lock brake system

  • Release and pull connector -2- off brake light switch - F- -1-.
  • Remove bolt -arrow-.
  • Unscrew brake light switch - F- from brake master cylinder.

Installation:

Carry out installation in the reverse sequence, noting the following:
